Incorporated in 1965 as Port Kirwan, from the early 18th century to 1960 the community was originally known as Admiral’s Cove, named after English fishing admirals who used to dock in the harbour. Adjacent to Fermeuse harbour, Portuguese fishermen used the harbour in the 16th century. English year round settlers began arriving in the mid 18th century. Later, in the early 19th century many Irish settlers arrived in the area. Early Surnames include Walsh, Aylwards, Trainors, O'Neills and O'Flahertys.
The first Postmistress was Mrs. Helen Brothers.
The community is also the site of a cookhouse dated back to the early 17th century. Located within the community is the Mike Shallow Community Centre, named after a famous boxer.
